FAQ
Discover everything you need to know about carbon credits, auctions, market standards, voluntary carbon markets, market participation, and VCM's services.
Contact us- What is a voluntary carbon market (VCM)?A voluntary carbon market enables organisations to buy and sell carbon credits voluntarily. It channels finance towards projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions, allowing organisations to address residual emissions while pursuing broader decarbonisation strategies.
- How does the voluntary carbon market work?Climate projects are developed under recognised methodologies, independently validated, registered, monitored, and verified. Verified emissions reductions or removals are then issued as uniquely identified carbon credits that can be traded, delivered to buyers, and ultimately retired when used for a climate claim.
- What are carbon credits?A carbon credit typically represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂) reduced or removed through a verified climate project. Each credit is issued through a recognised registry with a unique serial number, making it traceable and preventing reuse once retired.
- Who participates in voluntary carbon markets?Voluntary carbon markets bring together sustainable corporates, traders, project developers, advisors, and strategic partners. Corporates purchase credits to address residual emissions, traders and developers bring eligible supply to market, and advisors provide the expertise needed to support credible climate strategies and projects.
- Who are VCM's shareholders?VCM was established in October 2022 by the Public Investment Fund and Saudi Tadawul Group Holding Company. PIF holds an 80% stake, while Saudi Tadawul Group holds the remaining 20%.
- What types of projects are eligible for carbon credits on VCM?Eligible credits may originate from three principal project categories:
Emission reductions — Projects that avoid or reduce greenhouse gas emissions against a defined baseline, including renewable energy and clean-cooking solutions.
Nature-based removals — Projects that use natural systems to remove and store carbon, including reforestation, soil carbon, and ecosystem restoration.
Durable removals — Technology-enabled solutions that remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it in long-lived reservoirs, including direct air capture, biochar, and enhanced weathering.
All credits must be issued under a recognised standard supported by VCM, such as Verra's Verified Carbon Standard, Gold Standard, or Puro.earth, and must meet VCM's eligibility and integrity criteria.
